Physical Challenge

If you'd told me 5 years ago that I'd be spending my weekends doing any sort of physical activity outdoors I would have called you crazy. This upcoming weekend will be full of mother daughter bonding and running/walking for good causes. If you don't hear from me on Monday, I probably died as a result of exhaustion or maternal guilt tripping.

In case you haven't already heard, the Race for the Cure is being held tomorrow, September 12, 2009 in good old downtown Cleveland. This will be my third race for the cure. I'll be running the 5K while my mother will be walking the course. I'm not a very emotional person, but every year when I see survivors running and walking along side me, I can't help but get a little teary eyed thinking about the struggle that these survivors have gone through. It's also pretty heart-wrenching to see participants running or walking in honor of someone who didn't win their battle with breast cancer. It's also pretty amazing to see tens of thousands of people walking along the city streets.

Sunday will be a less emotional but more physical challenge. My mother and I are walking a half-marathon in Berea called the River Run. The proceeds from this event benefit diabetes research. I can't say that I've ever run or walked anywhere near 13 miles, but I have high hopes that my mom and I will finish in a decent time and with as little ouchiness as possible. Although we might run out of things to talk about.

After the race, we hope to check out Treehugger's new Sunday brunch buffet ( I hear there are multiple vegan options - score!). Afterwards, if we're still able to walk, we hope to stop by the Berea Arts Fest, which will feature visual and performing artists. I like supporting local arts festivals, and I hear that this one has been growing year after year.

Whatever you end up doing, I hope you enjoy this beautiful weekend.

  1. Please be sure to report on the Treehugger's brunch buffet. I'm definitely interested in what they had. I ran the River Run today as well and celebrated afterward with the Soul Vegetarian sandwich at Melt (the September special). It was amazing...and I'm definitely not a vegetarian (although I am a big fan of your blog).

  2. You probably ran past me! I walked the half marathon with my mother. It was a beautiful course!

I actually debated about whether or not to go to Melt afterwards. The sandwich of the month sounds so good. I'll have to try it. :)

Thanks for reading! Since I love Treehuggers but was totally underwhelmed by their brunch (they had fritatta with sausage, home fries, and something else that sounded unappetizing along with made to order pancakes, pasta salad, and brownies - we just got coffee and left :/) I probably won't be writing about it. Or going ever again. I'll stick to their weekday menu!

  3. Ahh alrighty. I bet I did go past you you and your mom at some point. What an awesome course!

You will definitely have to try the sandwich of the month. Like I said, I am a meat-eater and usually like meat on my sandwiches (unless it's like a falafel wrap mmmm), but the Soul Vegetarian blew me away.

Also thanks for the heads up regarding the Treehugger's brunch. Sounds like I may need to stick to their weekday menu as well!
