Amy's Tamale Verde

For some odd reason I've been on a Mexican food kick. I bought some black beans at the store and hope to attempt to make some burritos later in the week and I also picked up a new Amy's entree - Black Bean Tamale Verde.

Now, this might sound ignorant of me, but before eating this frozen deliciousness, I had no idea of what a tamale is. As I tasted and also read online, a tamale is a Latin American dish made of steam-cooked corn dough on the inside and generally some sort of meat, cheese or bean filling on the inside. So think Mexican cornbread stuffed with beans.

What got me to purchase this entree in the first place was seeing the verde sauce on the package. I love verde anything when it comes to Mexican food, and it's so hard to find in most Mexican restaurants around Cleveland. (If anyone knows of a great place to find a cheese enchilada topped with verde sauce, please let me know. I'll forever be indebted to you.) And as with nearly every other Amy's entree I've tried, the sauce on this entree didn't let me down. As an added bonus, I discovered that I like tamales. Back in my single-girl-I-don't-cook days I always used to make corn cake from a mix to take to work for "food" days, and this tamale reminded me of a less sweet version of corn cake. I have to say the side of rice was pretty good, too.

Note that this entree has 330 calories and 10 grams of fat. It's marketed as a "complete" meal, which I think is a valid statement since it's pretty filling. It's just soo good that I could have eaten a few more tamales!
