Good-bye, Gardenburger GardenSteaks

A few months ago, I discovered the Gardenburger GardenSteaks. There were originally three varieties - Gourmet Tuscan, Baja, and Gourmet Hula. I tried both the Tuscan and Baja "steaks" and quickly became a fan of the flavor of the Tuscan kind - just not the 290 calories per patty. I must not have been alone in that sentiment because the "steaks" were put into new packaging and had nutrition information shortly thereafter. At 210 calories each, I felt slightly better about eating the 11 ounce "steak." It has a great mix of vegetables and a nice, yet subtle blue cheese flavor. Since I prefer to eat burgers breadless, I really appreciate the large size of the Gardenburger "steaks" and feel like they make a great main entree.

But alas, my days of microwaving these GardenSteaks has come to an end. The only store I've found that carries these steaks is Whole Foods. On one of my more recent trips to the store, I was happy to see that the "steaks" were on sale - until I saw why. They were being discontinued by Whole Foods! (The horror!) It takes me quite awhile to find meat alternative foods that I like, let alone ones that I like so much I could almost eat them every day of the week.

I bought as many boxes of the GardenSteaks as I could fit in my freezer. That lasted me a few weeks, but my supply has just about run out. I have one lonely "steak" in my freezer that I'm saving for a day where I need a hearty and flavorful dinner. Siiigh.

On the bright side of things, this gives me a reason to try some other new meat alternatives...although I just wish I could keep buying these "steaks!"

  1. Matt says they weren't selling. Guess your sales weren't enough. But, he said you can ask them to special order a case of them for you if you really like them.

  2. P.S. He said you get a discount off of cases, too.

  4. They were the BEST! Loved to eat them breadless as the "meat" dish with a side of mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. SUCH a yummy, classic meal for a vegan.

  5. I am with you... loved them too. Argh. All good veggie things always come to a sad end! Dang.

  6. I have had this problem, too. But not with the Tuscan burger, which I have never seen at my Whole Foods. Gardenburger used to make a Flame-Grilled burger -- low in fat and carbohydrates, really big on flavor. It is no longer available; all I see are burgers much higher in fat and with 20-25 grams of carbohydrate.
